David Florence, Summer Camp Director
David grew up in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, enjoying time working on his grandparents’ farm and hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains. He studied English Literature at Hampden-Sydney College and theology at Princeton Theological Seminary before his ordination in the Presbyterian Church. From boarding school chaplain to Waldorf teacher, David has worked with children and youth in the outdoors for over 30 years. He and his wife, Anna, have two lacrosse playing sons and live in Decatur, Georgia where he is Associate pastor at Druid Hills Presbyterian Church. He has combined his love of the outdoors and his love of God to help create a place of wilderness discovery and spirituality at Camp Buc.
Daniel Thompson, Assistant Summer Camp Director
Daniel has worked in education and ministry for most of his career. He works with the camp counselors as their mentor and guide, particularly with initiative challenge courses, gardening and wilderness trips! His background as a middle school teacher, coach and leader in youth ministry gives him the experience and compassion for working with youth in a positive, influential role. Daniel holds a Masters in Education from Duquesne University and is pursuing his Master’s of Social Work at the University of Georgia.
Mary Jane Taylor, Artist-in-Residence
With a degree in psychology from Duke University and training as a certified spiritual director, Mary Jane has combined her formal education with her love of children and the outdoors to excel in developing the arts programs at Camp Buc. Mary Jane and her family have spent many summers hiking and climbing in Glacier National Park in Montana. She also has been a puppeteer and co-director of her own marionette theater company. By serving as a teacher and mentor to others, Mary Jane guides the children’s arts programs with compassion, care and devotion.
Tim Huitt, Camp Buc Ranger & Site Manager
“Ranger Tim” has become a jack-of-all-trades at Camp Buc. His background of living on a farm, co-owning an automotive repair facility, working with a construction company and being father have earned him the title of “Mr. Fix-it.” He works diligently to preserve the property and facilities of Camp Buc while continually seeking and experiencing God in nature. With a certification in Food Service and Ropes Course Facilitation Management, the Buc Outdoor Center has allowed Tim to hone his skills in those areas while he continues to develop and improve the Buc Outdoor Center.
Barbara Huitt, Camp Buc Assistant Site Manager
Barbara works in many different areas of the camp from making reservations to running the camp store to even mowing the grass! She studied business management in college and has worked in the retail industry for more than 20 years. She is a concierge of sorts at Buc, assisting in reservations, suggesting dining options and local activities. She happily assists Director David and Ranger Tim as needed all the while enjoying the beauty and glory of God’s creation as the backdrop for her daily work.
